A 49-YEAR-OLD woman has been ordered to do unpaid work in the community for her first crime of possession with intent to supply cannabis.

Bridget Shirley, of Braes Avenue, Whitecrook, appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week for sentencing after previously admitting to having a £500 block of cannabis on July 7 last year.

Her defence solicitor told the court: “She is a 49-year-old woman who never troubled the courts before now. She said it’s the best thing that’s happened to her. She stopped taking the drug and stopped smoking.

“It was explained to her this is a very serious matter.”

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry told her: “At 49, you move from being a person with an impeccable record to someone with a record. That should be a matter for considerable disappointment and shame for you.”

Shirley was ordered to carry out 125 hours of unpaid work within six months.
