WEST Dunbartonshire Council's chief executive has been declared an OBE in the New Year honours list.

Joyce Helen White was made chief executive of West Dunbartonshire Council in 2011 after working as executive director of corporate services for more than four years. Previous posts included Infratil Airports Europe, which was behind Glasgow Prestwick and two other international airports.

She was paid a total of £132,526 for 2016/17 according to council documents and is accountable for the work of about 5,500 council employees.

Moira McKenna, Girlguiding Scotland’s lead volunteer said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Joyce. As a volunteer with the leading charity for girls and young women in Scotland, Joyce has helped to inspire and empower hundreds of girls to enjoy new adventures, learn new skills, make new friends and have fun.

“From serving as a trustee for Girlguiding Scotland to supporting and growing guiding in her local area, Joyce brings endless energy and enthusiasm to all she does and her commitment to helping girls be their best is truly inspiring.”

Other honours went to actor James Cosmo, who hails from neighbouring Clydebank.

James Cosmo, known for his roles on the big and small screens, has been appointed an MBE for services to drama, while Joyce White becomes an OBE for services to local government, further education and girlguiding.

James Cosmo's roles have ranged from blockbusters such as Braveheart and Troy to this year's Wonder Woman as well as Trainspotting 2, partly filmed in Clydebank.

The 70-year-old is also known for his work on Game of Thrones and is regularly on screens in commercials for Bank of Scotland.

In 2016, he gave a special reading of The Holy City by playwright Stewart Conn at the 75th anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz.

Secretary of State for Scotland, David Mundell said: “I am pleased to see the New Year Honours 2018 recognise some of Scotland’s most deserving volunteers, community leaders and public figures.

“From the achievements of prominent sporting greats such as Mark Beaumont to the inspirational local heroes of our communities whose tireless dedication, commitment and compassion benefit so many across the length and breadth of Scotland, it is right that we mark their dedication and commitment. “I congratulate each and every recipient on their award - they truly deserve their recognition today and our thanks and praise for their contribution.”
