PUPILS at Scotstoun Primary were able to go to class as normal on Monday despite a weekend fire.

Firefighters were called to the school around 6.50am on Saturday for a blaze in the roof space of the gym hall and fuelzone annexe.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokeswoman said: "It was a fire in an outbuilding at the school. There have been no casualties.

"Firefighters were involved in cutting away and ventilating."

Glasgow City Council said education director Maureen McKenna visited the school to see the damage and that the school would be open as normal on Monday. A spokesman said the impact was "reasonably limited".

In a letter to parents, head teacher Gill MacKay wrote: "The Gym Hall is badly damaged and a full assessment is underway by Education Services and City Building. There will be two containers put into the Duncan Avenue playground to store any salvaged equipment.

"Education services are working to arrange temporary accommodation on the school site, and we are working to minimise disruption to learning."

In a separate incident last week, firefighters attended Clydebank High on Friday at 12.05pm for a fire that set off sprinklers. The school was evacuated for a short time before pupils returned to class.

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokesman said: "The sprinkler system was activated at Clydebank High School at 12.05pm and the building was evacuated. SFRS attended and have declared the building safe."
