Local health officials have issued a reminder for all those requiring repeat prescriptions to plan ahead ahead of the deadline for pre-Christmas ordering.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has issued the reminder due to Christmas Day falling on a Monday this year, some GP surgeries are likely to be closed for up to four days, although the advice remains to check with your local surgery to check on exact arrangements.

The festive schedule means that the repeat prescription deadline this year is Tuesday, December 19 and with NHS 24 expected to be very busy at this time of year, those requiring repeat prescriptions are asked to save time and stress over the festive period by organising in advance.

John McAnaw, head of pharmacy at NHS 24, said it is important for people taking regular medication to make sure they have enough supplies to last them through to the New Year.

He added: “There’s always so much to get organised at this time of year, with only a couple of weeks left until Christmas, but it’s important to remember those winter health necessities on your ‘to do’ list.

“It’s a good idea to pick up some over-the-counter remedies for winter ailments such as coughs and colds and if you need regular medications, take a minute to check you have enough left to cover the holiday period. It’s important not to waste medicines, so only order what you need, and pick it up in plenty of time.”
