A MOTHER accused of murdering her daughter wanted a son and had “no love in her eyes” for the baby, the child’s aunts told the High Court in Glasgow.

Sadia Ahmed is on trial accused of murdering 14-month-old Inaya Ahmed at their Drumchapel home in Bernisdale Drive in April last year.

Shagufta Yasmin, 45, said that 28-year-old Sadia Ahmed “cried a lot” when she discovered she was expecting a girl and spoke of an abortion.

Ms Yasmin claimed that the day that Inaya died, she spoke to Sadia Ahmed in her bedroom after they had returned from the hospital.

She said: “I asked Sadia tell me how you killed Inaya. Initially she said: ‘It is between me and Allah.’”

Ms Yasmin claimed Sadia Ahmed smiled when asked if she felt “mercy” for her daughter.

The jury was told that on May 4, 2016, Ms Yasmin confessed to police that she had killed Inaya, by placing a pillow over her face.

Mr Kearney asked: “Why did you do this,” and Ms Yasmin replied: “I thought they would release Inaya’s body. I just wanted justice for Inaya and her body back.”

Defence QC Ian Duguid asked Ms Yasmin: “If she was a cold, calculating laughing killer why did you allow her to continue to live in the family home after Inaya died and when there was a seven-and-a-half-month-old child, there” and she replied: “We made a mistake. We shouldn’t have done that.”

Ms Yasmin told the court she was telling the truth in court, but had lied to police last year when she told them Inaya had choked on a piece of bread.

Earlier the jury was shown a video of Inaya being fed with a syringe by Ms Yasmin surrounded by members of her family.

As the footage was screened Ms Yasmin broke down it tears and so did the accused.

Mr Duguid asked Mrs Yasmin: “Are you the person with the syringe in the film,” and she replied: “Yes.”

The QC then said: “On one occasion when she is flat on her back you used a syringe to inject milk in her mouth.” and Ms Yasmin responded: “I was just trying to feed her.”

Mr Duguid said that Sadia Ahmed was charged with assaulting her daughter by feeding her with a syringe and then added “But you weren’t charged with that,” and Ms Yasmin replied: “No, I did it lovingly.”

Mr Duguid went on: “You are saying Sadia didn’t want to have a girl, wasn’t it that her mother-in-law Noor Ahmed and her husband Suleman didn’t want her to have a girl,” and the witness replied: “No that’s not true. They liked Inaya better than a boy.”

Meanwhile, Nadia Ahmed claimed Sadia Ahmed told her she placed a pillow over the tot’s face.

The 44-year-old told the court: “I was concerned and I had told my mum that in Sadia’s eyes I never saw any love for Inaya. She did not look after her.”

Nadia Ahmed told the court that in June this year, during Ramadan, Sadia Ahmed phoned her “to ask you for forgiveness”.

She was asked about her initial police statement which she gave at Drumchapel police office on April 25, last year, in which she said she had no concerns about Sadia Ahmed’s treatment of her daughter and claimed the child choked on food.

When asked about this Ms Ahmed replied: “My first police statement was a lie, but I’m telling the truth today.”

The court heard Sadia Ahmed and her family had lived in Nadia Ahmed’s home for three weeks following the accused’s alleged confession while police searched the home of Inaya.

Ms Ahmed was then asked why she allowed her own daughters to sleep in the same bedroom during these three weeks with “a cold-blooded killer” and she replied: “I, myself was not stable at the time. I didn’t know what I thought. Today sitting here I can’t think what I was thinking a year and a half ago.”

Consultant anaesthetist Dr Jocelyn Erskine told of how she and a team of medics battled to save Inaya who arrived at the hospital with no heartbeat and no pulse.

She said she spoke to Sadia Ahmed on April 20, 2016 and explained to her that Inaya was going to die because she had irreversible brain damage.

Mr Kearney said: “Was she very distressed and tearful at that time,” and Dr Erskine replied: ‘She was.”

Sadia Ahmed denies all charges. The trial before judge Lord Matthews continues.
