THE future leaders of West Dunbartonshire were training in Clydebank this week as they learn vital skills to help other young people.

Charity Y Sort It and the council’s Working4U programme are training 21 pupils to be youth leaders so more projects can be made for youngsters and run by them.

As well as workshops in art, team building and physical activities, the youths are learning skills they can take into the employment world as well.

When the Post caught up with the youngsters, they were trying to find ways to protect an egg before dropping it within The Hub.

Colin Law, 16, said: “I had no idea what I wanted to do and just seeing the way you can change someone’s life from being a youth worker is something I really want to do.

“It’s something I want to do in my future. There’s no significant courses, mostly volunteering and training – it’s good that they’re giving people this training here.”

Youth worker Jason Smith, who is helping run the sessions, said they would also be going on a residential weekend to Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre.

He said they are teaching how to deliver sessions in sports and arts, how to deal with bullying or resolving conflict and also boosting their own confidence.

Jason added: “They’re going to be taking more of a role.

"There will always be staff present but young people are involving and running it.”
