A DRUMCHAPEL man who was behind bars for behaving in a threatening and abusive manner has died in prison.

Following a fatal accident inquiry at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier this month, Sheriff Shona Gilroy issued a judgment and a formal determination after John Hay, a prisoner on remand, hanged himself in his Barlinnie prison cell on February 19.

Hay, from Dalsetter Avenue, was in prison after pleading guilty to charges of threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to appear at court.

The 39-year-old was due to stand trial in March on a domestic assault charge and to be sentenced for the other offences.

An inquiry into his death heard he was “upbeat and very talkative” when seen by prison staff and denied having any suicidal thoughts on February 14 when he arrived.

The following day, another prison worker had no concerns after an interview with him.

Hay was seen at 4.45pm the day before his death by a prison officer who noted he was “safe and well” in his cell.

But, he was found the following morning dead in his cell.

A note on the worktop in the cell, which appeared to be written by Hay, was found by police.

Dr Marjorie Turner examined the body and certified the cause of death.
