AN ambitious Clydebank teenager has swapped her dream of being an air hostess for becoming a frontline firefighter.

Angelika Wujtowicz is considering a career with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service after spending 12 weeks with White Watch at Clydebank Community Fire Station.

The innovative programme saw Angelika taken under the wing of firefighter Louise Teo, and given a taste of what it takes to protect Scotland’s communities.

The 16-year-old said: “I loved being involved with the initiative – it has done a lot for my self-confidence and my skillset going forward.

“I have always been working towards becoming an air hostess.

“But after completing this programme with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service I am now considering joining the team when I turn 18.

“I really enjoyed my time here and I miss everyone.”

Angelika worked with the local crew in simulated training exercises, covering everything from search and rescue to road traffic collision incidents – as well as visiting the National Training Centre in Cambuslang and the SFRS Command and Control Centre in Johnstone.

The mentoring programme was carried out in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council.

James McNeil is the local senior officer (LSO) for the East and West Dunbartonshire, Argyll and Bute area.

He said: “The SFRS has a distinguished and long standing involvement with working with children and young people in West Dunbartonshire.

“Our firefighters do so much more than just fight fire – they can also be the ideal mentor and role models.

“SFRS firefighters come from every background and walk of life and all of them share a common desire to protect life in all its forms.

“This ideal carries through to how we engage with young people in the community.

“Not only can we help them learn new skills, but we can give that guiding hand and listening ear that can see them become ambitious and successful young adults.

“Through partnership working we have the opportunity to improve their skills and experience, assisting them to fulfil their potential and by doing so enabling them to move onto positive destinations and careers.

“I am delighted that Angelika enjoyed her time with us and I wish her every success in the future.”
