A MAN who is living with brain cancer has got his latest scan and been cleared to travel to the other side of the globe thanks to generous Bankies.

James Austin was diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma in March 2016 - and though surgery removed most of the tumour filling a quarter of his brain cavity, he will always have the cancer.

But the 26-year-old has outlived his estimated life expectancy of six to 14 months and a recent community fundraiser pulled in more than £5,500 to send him on a dream trip as well as donations for charity CLIC Sergeant.

Originally, family friends who launched the campaign had planned to send James to Japan, but he will now leave at the end of November for Bali, for a week, before moving on to Australia for a month.

James, who lives in Old Kilpatrick, told the Post his latest MRI scan showed no growth to the remaining tumour and he has been declared fit to travel.

He said: “I’m very lucky to have had no growth on my continued fight. There’s a small percentage of the tumour which remains but hasn’t grown, and as long as it doesn’t grow, I’m good.

“I just want to thank everyone for their support again, especially my girlfriend Katherine, my mum Mary, sisters Lindsay, Ashley, and Skye, and my dad James.”

The horticulturist will take off on his dream holiday on November 23, spending three days in Dubai before enjoying a week in Bali . He’ll then off to Australia to take in the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

Then James and longtime-love Katherine will head to the Gold Coast where they’ll celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year with friends who live in the area before returning to Scotland in January.

The pair said they cannot wait for the sunny adventure, but one downfall for James is he can’t bring his beloved cat – who, he jokes, Katherine has banned from their trip.

He told the Post: “I managed to go on three holidays last year – I was on holiday a week after the chemo – so I can’t wait.”

But the true challenge for the pair, has been deciding on the location for their holiday, having originally planned to visit Japan.

He said: “People ask you where you want to go and I rhymed off about 10 different places. You can’t pick just one place in the world.

“I would want to go to Japan in the summer when the plants that I love are at their best.

“But I just can’t wait to get away. It’ll be fantastic.”
