CLYDEBANK’S MP has written to retailers and the shopping centre over the mass of abandoned trolleys at entrances.

Martin Docherty-Hughes said he has written to Asda, Iceland and the Clyde Shopping urging them to take action after receiving a number of complaints, particularly about the trolley bay opposite Clydebank rail station.

There are also a number at the Kilbowie Road entrance just in front of the taxi rank.

Mr Docherty-Hughes said: “Abandoned trolleys are a nuisance and as a regular visitor to the shopping centre I’ve been disappointed by how often the trolley bays are full and overflowing – resulting in trolleys being discarded and the pedestrian walkways being blocked.

“The trolley bay is located directly across from Clydebank train station so it’s often the first thing people see when they visit our town.

“Abandoned trolleys littering the entrance to the shopping centre sends out completely the wrong message and I would urge retailers to listen to these concerns and take prompt action to keep the entrance and walkways clear.”

An Asda spokesman said: “We want our trolleys to remain in our store for customers to use, which is why we have systems in place to stop them disappearing. Our Clydebank store operates regular patrols to collect trolleys that have gone astray.

"We also work closely with Clydebank shopping centre to ensure that our trolleys are in the right place for our customers. Shoppers can contact the store directly or call Trolleywise on 0800 316 1241 if they spot a trolley which isn’t where it should be and it will be collected.”

The Post also approached Iceland and the shopping centre for comment but did not receive a reply before going to press.
