A FINAL design for the two-year overhaul of one of Clydebank's main roads could be agreed within weeks.

The A814 of Glasgow Road and Dumbarton Road between Argyll Road and Clydebank Library would see 20mph speed limits, enhanced pedestrian spaces and high-quality materials to boost the town's civic buildings.

Half the costs - £2 million - will come from transport body Sustrans if they agree on the design.

Last week's infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee (IRED) was updated on the plan and heard the final design could be agreed by "late June 2017" with another public consultation to follow.

It also states: "The works would be undertaken in phases with as minimum impact as possible on traffic, businesses, residents and events taking place in surrounding buildings including the town hall.

"In this respect it is anticipated that the works would commence in 2018, in phases, and be completed by March 2020."

Details have not be revealed about the plans but a map attached to the committee papers does show a new pedestrian crossing in front of the library. There is currently no formal crossing point between the junction with Kilbowie Road and Agamemnon Street in Dalmuir, a 15-20 minute walking distance.
