A CLYDEBANK chippy owner has been hailed a “fairy codfather” for granting the wish of dozens of veterans with the help of a couple of fish suppers.

Residents at Erskine Park care home – which care for UK veterans and their spouses – had been encouraged to make a wish to display on their Wishes Tree and one wish cropped up more than once – a decent fish supper.

And when McMonagles owner John found out about the pleas for the traditional meal he decided to fulfil the residents’ requests.

John not only delivered the fish suppers in person to the care homes but also added a special message inside the boxes which read “to the brave men and women who serve their country”.

Around 180 fish suppers have now been delivered to the home in Erskine.

John told the Post: “When I delivered it they were absolutely in awe. It was overwhelming. They were chatting to us for over an hour, telling us stories about the football. The staff who work there are just amazing.”

The residents and staff were delighted with John’s surprise visit.

Carol McPhail, activities assistant at Erskine Park, said: “I am always amazed by the generosity of our supporters,

“Our fairy godfather John granted the wish of several of our residents for a fish supper.”

Erskine Park cares for veterans who have advanced levels of dementia which can often have affects on a person’s appetite and eating habits.

Lesley Wylie, home manager, said: “Even residents who don’t perhaps have the best appetite ate a whole supper. The smell of the food and crunch of the batter are very evocative and helped bring memories back.”

However, John was as thankful to the residents as they were to him.

He added: “You could say they are unsung heroes. I think people of my age really understand what these people did for the country.

“They could have asked for anything and all they wanted was a fish supper. We’re going to keep this going and hopefully deliver homemade steak pies next, I think they’ll appreciate that.”

Erskine homes care and support more than 1000 veterans and their families each year.

Other wishes from the residents include days out such as a trip to the Riverside Museum, a visit to Millport or a day out fly fishing.

Erskine Veterans’ Wishes Week runs from June 1 to 8.

Supporters are encouraged to fundraise for the care homes with bake sales, bag packs or a ‘Purple Day’ in the colours of the care homes to raise awareness.
