A CLYDEBANK councillor has been fined for careless driving at the weekend.

Cllr Jim Finn was given a £100 fine and three penalty points on his licence for the incident around 7.25pm on Monday, May 20in Langfaulds Crescent.

The Kilpatrick ward councillor’s vehicle hit another, damaging it.

Cllr Finn said the fine was for undue care and attention and noted even Scotland’s transport secretary, Humza Yousaf, was fined last year for driving without insurance.

He told the Post: “Anyone can have a traffic offence. I didn’t expect any special treatment because I’m a councillor.

“Police made their decision - that’s it finished as far as I’m concerned. It happens to everyone.”

The SNP said they would take no further action against Cllr Finn, who was recently made convener of the planning and licensing committees and the tendering committee.

In a statement to the media, a spokesman said: “Cllr Finn paid a small fine for a minor traffic incident, and no further action is being taken.”

A police spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that a 63-year-old man was issued with a fixed penalty notice in connection with a road traffic offence.”

A spokeswoman for the council said: “West Dunbartonshire Council would not comment on individual councillors. Councillors are regulated by the Standards Commission for Scotland using the Councillors’ Code of Conduct rather than by individual councils.”
