A DRUMCHAPEL grandfather has netted a top tennis title after being named Coach of the Year by a national sports charity.

Eric Flack, who is president and a coach at the Drumchapel Tennis Club, has been presented with the award by Tennis For Free’s regional development officer For Scotland Kirsty Price.

David Buchanan-Smith, fellow Drumchapel Tennis Club coach, nominated the 76-year-old, who made the Queen’s honours list when he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to tennis and the community in Drumchapel and Blairdardie in 2014.

David said: “Eric is a legend still to be coaching at 76, no matter what the weather is. He is the heart and soul of the club and community and truly deserves this coaching award.

“He works so hard and everyone loves his wonderful stories and the kids love the games he comes up with. Eric lives right next to the club, so it really is his second home.”

The married father-of-two, who turns 77 in June and is awaiting a hip operation, began coaching in 1969 and has been club president at Drumchapel since 1972. Three of his six grandchildren also play at the club.

Eric said: “I was very surprised at my age to be considered for the award and thank everyone involved.

“I am totally delighted and touched to receive it. Coaching at Drumchapel Park in the middle of February in the pouring rain with about 25 people playing makes it so worthwhile.”

Paul Jessop, Tennis For Free chief executive, added: “Our congratulations go to Eric for all his hard work at Drumchapel. He has played an enormous part in getting people of all ages into the sport and we are delighted the honour has gone to such a popular and dedicated coach.”

The club, which is based on Garscadden Road, hosted an open day last weekend for budding Andy Murrays and Serena Williams to have their chance to be trained by legendary Eric and his team.

The coaches will also lead free two-hour tennis sessions in Drumchapel Park on Howgate Avenue in partnership with the charity and Glasgow Life.

All equipment is provided with the event beginning at 1.30pm every Saturday.

Those wishing to take part should register at drumchapeltennis.co.uk.
