A YOUTH group’s weekend of adventure in the Borders has been guaranteed, thanks to the power of the humble pancake.

The tasty treats were the main ingredients in a fundraising drive at St Andrew’s Church, in Barrhead, which raised enough cash to pay for a trip to an adventure centre at Whithaugh Park over the weekend of June 16 to 18.

Church members Anne Howieson and Elizabeth Turnbull rolled up their sleeves and got to work in the kitchen as a team of helpers served the freshly-baked pancakes and other treats, along with a constant flow of tea and coffee.

Anne said the fundraiser is held every year to help pay for the weekend trip, run by the Christian group Urban Saints.

She told the Barrhead News: “This is an annual trip which the kids love as they can take part in a range of outdoor fun activities, ranging from canoeing to zip wires.

“A party of around 40 to 50 youngsters will be going, comprising the Sunday school, Kids’ Club, Boys’ Brigade and leaders.”

Among those who dropped in to support Saturday’s fundraising event was church minister, the Reverend Jim Cowan.

Anne added: “It was a great team effort and we are delighted to have raised a total of £640, thanks to everyone’s generosity.

“The weekend trip to the Borders will have a Christian ethos attached to it and the theme will be to let the youngsters explore life, faith, adventure and the value of friendship.”
