NEW Provost William Hendrie spoke of his honour and pride at being elected to take over from Douglas McAllister.

The SNP Clyde Waterfront councillor was elected West Dunbartonshire Provost during last night's statutory meeting of the local authority.

And he vowed to be a "fair Provost" during his time at the helm.

He said: "I would like to thank the Council for my nomination.

"It is a great honour and I promise to be a fair Provost and mindful of the democratic process."

He added: "I would also like to thank Douglas McAllister for his time in office and the good job he did.

"I will do the best job that I can for the people of West Dunbartonshire."

Mr Hendrie has been a serving councillor for the last 10 years and admitted in his recent election address that it was still "an honour and a privilege to do so."

One of his priorities going forward is the repair of roads and pavements locally and to tackle some of the road traffic issues around West Dunbartonshire.

He added: "The council really needs to look at the condition of our pavements and roads - our workers do a great job but we need to find money to do more. Also, there is traffic grid lock at peak times and this should be investigated to improve the movement of traffic."
