WITH certain politicians condemned so frequently for telling fibs these days, you'd think others might insist on being truthful.

But not so with this weekend's Booked! festival event, "Ten Writers Telling Lies".

To be fair to the writers and musicians involved, it is only one lie hidden amongst the art and it's all in the name of drawing together fans of literature and music who might not normally go to the same events.

The idea comes from Bankie singer-songwriter Jim Byrne who wanted audiences to experience stories, poetry and music with an anthology and CD and live performances.

In the introduction to the book, authors Zoë Strachan and Louise Welsh state: "The writers here may be telling lies, but you can believe us when we promise you that you have a treat ahead."

The unique collaboration takes place on Saturday at Dalmuir Library as part of the Booked! literary festival - two weeks of talks, readings and cabaret across West Dunbartonshire.

Magi Gibson, the first Makar of Stirling in 500 years, said of the project: "An unusual and original mix of song, story and poems, Ten Writers Telling Lies is a creative treat for the mind and soul. You can trust my opinion on this. I'm a writer. Now, I wouldn't lie, would I?"

Pat Byrne, one of the authors in the anthology and organisers, said: "We thought it would be a good idea for people going to music festivals and the same about those doing writing festivals and book launches but not gigs and trying to capture different audiences.

"I knew quite a few writers so we came up with this idea and that there would be a lie in there somewhere that we will not reveal.

"Each story relates to a song on the CD. Part of it came out of the idea of when people write fiction, it's not fact.

"The audience will get readings and music and they can find out more about the project and mingle with writers and musicians."

The group put on three events as part of the West End Festival last year and have been invited back in 2017 after the popularity.

Pat added: "This idea about different audiences worked really well. It's been really good fun. People seem to like it. We are very excited about performing at Booked."

Ten Writers Telling Lies takes place at 2pm on May 13 at Dalmuir Library and is free. To book, go to booked2017.eventbrite.co.uk.
