ALLOA hitman Greig Spence admitted that games don’t come much bigger than his side’s playoff clash with Airdrie on Wednesday evening.

The Wasps head into the playoffs in great form, having lost just twice since the turn of the year.

And their top scorer revealed that Wednesday’s encounter is one they have been working towards all season.

Spence told Advertiser Sport: “Games don’t come much bigger than this one. Our target for the season was to win the title but realistically we knew we would be around the playoff area so it’s something we’ve spent the year working towards.

"We are ready to go. We have been playing really well in the second half of the season and it’s great to be carrying that sort of form into the playoffs.

“You are always going to be quietly confident but I’m sure Airdrie, Brechin and Raith will be too.

"You have to get your head down and not let the occasion get to you. But it’s important to enjoy the game on the night too because that is when you play your best football.”

Despite the magnitude of the tie, Spence revealed he would be doing his best to treat the game like any other as the Wasps look to beat their League One rivals on their own patch for the second time in three weeks.

He said: “It is like a cup final in a way, even though it is over two legs. But the key is to stay relaxed and try to treat it like any other game. You don’t want to go into it all guns blazing, get caught out and end up chasing the tie.

"If you do go a goal down, it’s not the end of the world because you have got that second game to find a route back into it. It’s important not to let the occasion get to you.”

Spence is keen to add to his already-impressive tally for the season and says Alloa’s faithful fans will provide the motivation for the squad to go out and reclaim their place in the Championship after one season in the third tier.

He added: “My personal aim is to always play and score in the big games but I don’t mind who scores or how they score, as long as it gets us the win. As a player, you always want to do well in these kinds of games.

"There will be a decent number of fans there and it’s special for them too. They’ve supported us loyally all season and stood by us so we want to do it for them.”
