A PHONE scam has left a 21-year-old man nearly £2,000 out of pocket and prompted a police warning to the community.

The resident of Kinfauns Drive, Drumchapel, was expecting a call from telecoms giant TalkTalk about his broadband when he was phoned around 2pm on April 3.

The male voice identified himself as being from TalkTalk and said he needed remote access to the 21-year-old’s computer, which he granted. While online, the victim went on to his bank account and the remote access transferred nearly £2,000 by wire transfer.

Sergeant Bart Simonis at Drumchapel police office said there were no similar reports from the area but warned residents not to give remote access to the computer or pass details to anyone phoning out of the blue.

The details of thousands of TalkTalk customers were hacked in 2015 and last October, they were fined £400,000 for security failings which allowed data to be accessed “with ease”.

Former information commissioner Christopher Graham said the attack on the firm was “car crash”.

TalkTalk issues guidance that if someone calls about router issues, customers can hang up and dial 150 from their home phone.

Their website states: “Think calmly about what you are being told, ask yourself if it makes sense. Don’t give out any personal details. If it feels wrong, hang up.”
