A MUM whose Old Kilpatrick teenager died from a sudden heart condition is inviting others to take up the campaign for more defibrillators in public spaces.

Norma Docherty has championed the cause of getting training into schools and other venues since the death of son Scott at the age of 17 in 2011.

Scott died from SADS (Sudden Arrythmic Death Syndrome) prompting Mrs Docherty, husband Andy and sister Lilian to make vital heart stimulation machines available in as many sites as possible.

They have helped donate defibrillators to Clyde Shopping Centre, Clydebank Town Hall, Old Kilpatrick Bowling Club, Gavinburn and Linnvale primaries, both Clydebank high schools and Our Lady of Loretto Primary.

The school is the eighth venue to get the lifesaving machine and the ninth is slated to go to Napier Hall in Old Kilpatrick.

But Mrs Docherty said the 10th – still to be determined – might be her last for the moment.

With first grandchild Ava having arrived six months ago and so many residents of all ages trained to use the machines, Mrs Docherty said they have given a legacy for Scott – and hopes others will do their bit.

“I feel I have done a good job so far and I’m proud of what I have done,” she told the Post. “I might take a step back after the 10th defibrillator. I feel it’s a good legacy to leave for Scott.

“I wish other people would club together to get these machines – I feel as if it’s all down to me. The more people who have defibrillators and the training the better” Mrs Docherty and her family have backed the cardiac charity SADS and their campaign to put the machines in every school and raised more than £12,000 towards the cause.

Westminster is to give second reading to a private member’s bill on February 24 requiring defibrillators in all education establishments, leisure and sports centres and other facilities.

Anne Jolly, founder of SADS UK, the Ashley Jolly SAD Trust, said: “Schools are a major hub in the community that should have defibrillators o save lives. The charity is delighted Our Lady of Loretto Primary now has this lifesaving equipment.”
