WORKMATES of a Knightswood man waiting on a vital heart transplant stripped down in support of the ‘We Need Everybody’ call for more organ donors.

Sales team members at Mercedes-Benz of Glasgow bared almost all in a bid to highlight the importance of the NHS Organ Donor Register for workmate Michael Hanlon who has been on the urgent waiting list at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital since July last year.

Michael works as a sales executive for the car dealership and his employer has encouraged team members at the Glasgow branch to consider joining the register as part of an awareness drive dedicated to Michael.

As previously reported in the Post, the father of three - who was recently visited by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon - was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 2004, a condition which was passed on genetically.

After experiencing heart failure in 2007 and undergoing open heart surgery to have a metal valve fitted, an infection in 2014 caused Michael’s condition to worsen and leading to him being listed for transplant.

The only cure for the 55-year-old’s condition is a transplant, however because of his blood group, he can only receive an O-type heart, narrowing the field for him.

Michael said: “I would never have expected the guys at work to go to these lengths to help the cause, but it’s great that they’re backing such an important message.

“People who join the register are heroes in my eyes, that one decision to sign up could ultimately save a life.

“As time goes on, the wait gets more difficult but I always try to stay positive. Every day is a day closer to getting fixed and I just have to set myself goals, stay focused.

“There’s no other option as I’ve too much to live for, like the hundreds of other people in Scotland waiting. I’d urge anyone who supports organ donation to make today the day they join.”

Michael’s hope for the future is that he can return to his career, and life can continue – a sentiment backed by his employer.

Richard Helm, used car sales leader at Mercedes-Benz of Glasgow said: “Michael is a huge part of our team at Mercedes-Benz and team members and customers alike are hoping that the call he desperately needs comes soon.

“Today is about spreading the word about organ donation and encouraging as many people as possible to join the register. Something that takes only two minutes could mean the world to someone waiting, like Michael.”
