POLICE are hunting a suspect behind a car set on fire in a driveway in Clydebank early this morning.

Around 12.45am, police and emergency services responded to a report of the blaze in Kirkwood Avenue. Nobody was injured in the incident and the cost of the damage is still being determined.

Police said it is understood that the suspect may have entered the area from the canal path close to Duntreath Avenue. He approached the car before smashing the back window and setting the car on fire using an accelerant. Following the incident the suspect made off across the canal footbridge into the Whitecrook housing estate.

The suspect is described as a man around 6 foot tall, wearing a dark hooded top and was carrying a light coloured carrier bag prior to the incident.

Detective Inspector Andy Doherty, Clydebank CID, is appealing for information. He said: “This was a senseless act which caused a blaze which could have easily spread to the house. This reckless act will not be tolerated in our community. Our enquiries are underway to trace the person responsible and ensure they are held to account for their actions.

“I would appeal to local residents and any dog walkers who were on the canal path or within the Kirkwood Avenue and Whitecrook areas. You may have witnessed the fire, or perhaps seen someone acting suspiciously in the early hours of Thursday morning. Any information, no matter how small, will greatly assist our ongoing investigation.

“Anyone with information about the fire or who has any information that will assist police with the investigation can contact Clydebank CID via 101.”

Information can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
