‘TIS the season for good will and one Drumchapel charity is seeking to ensure everyone has a very Merry Christmas, by offering a traditional dinner to those planning on spending the day alone.

Drumhub is inviting guests to attend St Mark’s Church in Drumchapel where a free three-course meal will be served at 2.30pm on Christmas Day.

The charity is hoping to welcome in up to 65 Drumchapel residents to allow those without family or friends to mingle and enjoy the day together.

The festive meal is the brain child of one of the charity’s founders, Alison Horner, who hopes the event will encourage those not to spend the big day alone.

The 58-year-old said: “My family are all grown up now and they all have their own families and I thought there must be other people in similar situations and it would be good to bring them together.

“You can go for Christmas lunch any time during the season but it’s not the same as having it on the day itself, especially if you’re sitting on your own.

“They are more than welcome. We would want them to come along if it all possible so that we can have a community dinner because Drumhub is about the community looking after itself.”

“If we find people it would be a benefit to, that’s great and if it’s successful we would like to continue it.”

Dinner guests will be treated to a starter of soup, choice of chicken or ham for main with a side of vegetables and a sweet treat for dessert – even Santa will be popping by to drop off a gift for each person at the table.

Funding donations were made from housing associations and Area Partnership, but the majority of work will come from volunteers, with everything from the soup to the mince pies to the service being offered by kind-hearted locals.

Alison said: “Some local people who have heard about it have phoned up and asked to help so that’s great.”

“I’ve told people it’s whatever they can afford, it all helps.

“One of our members has chosen to volunteer on the day although he lives alone so he could sit and have a meal himself he has chosen to help out.”

The group have contacted local doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies asking if they’ll hand out flyers at their discretion to those they think may enjoy the day and are using social media as a way of connecting with possible dinner guests.
