BANKIE college students have been getting into the Christmas spirit by helping those in need.

Students studying care courses at West College Scotland’s Queen’s Quay campus joined forces with pupils from the establishment’s Greenock counterpart once again to take part in Blythswood Care’s Shoe Box Appeal to help provide practical support for those in need.

To achieve the outcomes for their course unit ‘Working with Others’, the students decided to get involved in a charity event and after being inspired by a video about the appeal, the group went on to created 140 shoe boxes filled with goods in total.

Christine Morton, Clydebank campus childhood practice lecturer, said: “The students were very generous with their time and contributions – just our group collected 42 boxes this year!”

Kate Kennedy, Greenock campus health & social care lecturer, added: “This type of event ties into the ethos of our department which is ‘Care and Life Sciences’.

“I feel it encourages students to think about the basic needs of others that are not being met, and that by being involved in this appeal they will put a smile on people’s faces as they open their box and realise that others in this world do care.”

The students delivered the boxes at Blythswood Care’s warehouse and helped to pack the shoe boxes for shipping out.

A representative from Blythswood Care said: “I’m glad to see the students from the college back and pleased we had increased the number of boxes from last year to 140. I hope they will participate again in the future!”
