ITS cast were some of Hollywood's biggest stars, its setting was the world's most famous city and even almost 60 years after its Broadway debut it still boasts millions of fans throughout the globe.

There's no denying West Side Story is a classic, so much so even some of the biggest names in the industry still quiver at the thought of taking on the roles made famous by Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno in the 1961 film adaptation.

But for Clydebank Musical Society's (CMS) multi-talented junior section, it's nothing more than another day at the office as the teens work tirelessly to bring the bright lights of New York City to Clydebank Town Hall.

Taking the lead role of Maria - and filling the shoes of her iconic predecessors - is 15-year-old St Peter's the Apostle pupil Yasmin Bennett and she's not fazed in the slightest.

The bubbly teen told the Post: "This is my third show with them - I started in my first year of high school - and it's going great.

"This is the first big role I have ever had and I love it, it's going brilliantly.

"I was really surprised when I got the part because it was the first audition I had ever done and I was surprised at how well it went."

The talented youngster, joined by her ensemble of around 50 other future performers, will take to the stage on October 26 to 29, and they're in no doubt they blow the audience away with their rendition of the hit after the months of hard work they've put in.

Gillian Stewart, chairperson of the CMS, said: "We do workshops every April for three weeks to teach them all a little bit then we hold auditions to get in the club because we've always got more kids there than we can put on stage.

"Then we do auditions for the main parts so there's a lot that goes into but it's going great, I seen a part of it the other week and it looks absolutely wonderful.

"Now it's all coming together great and they're getting pretty excited."

Yasmin is certainly getting excited.

With dreams of following in the footsteps of Broadway legend and star of hit film Frozen, Idina Menzel, the budding star hopes to take to the stage as Wicked's Elphaba.

But until the day comes when her name is up in lights, Yasmin is enjoying every minute of her first starring role.

She added: "I just love the feeling when I get on stage. It's a bit worrying but I'm just hoping everything goes perfectly.

"My favourite song is A Boy Like That. I sing it with Brianna Jolly, who plays Anita, and we really bounce off each other so the energy is amazing."

Tickets, which cost £12 for adults and £10 concession, are available through CMS' Facebook page or Ticket Source.
