A NEW map reflecting the clan holdings of areas throughout the country has shown Clydebank was led by the Clan Douglas.

The map, which looks at holdings from the 17th century, aims to create a resource that could be enjoyed by Scots across the globe, allowing them to discover their clan history, motto, and tartan in an interactive way.

The largest clan holding in Clydebank at that time was Clan Douglas, which sported a grey and black-style tartan and the motto ‘Never Behind’, and it’s possible there are still ancestors of the clan living in the area today.

According to the map, the Clydebank clan’s history as: “The Douglases, from Douglas in Lanarkshire, are an armigerous, noble Lowland clan.

“Their leaders gained territories throughout the Borders, Angus, Lothian, Moray and in France and Sweden.

“The Douglases were one of Scotland’s most powerful families and prominent in the Lowlands during the late Middle Ages.

“The heads of the Douglases held the titles Black Douglas and later Red Douglas.

“The principal Douglas is the Duke of Hamilton, but his surname is Douglas-Hamilton, thus Lyon Court prevents him from assuming chiefship of the name.”

For those residents from other clans, they can also use the search function to find their clan holdings and discover where their ancestors held as well as their own history, motto and tartan.
