RESIDENTS are being invited to see plans for a new Clyde bridge being considered from Clydebank or Yoker to Renfrewshire.

As well as being the only road crossing between the Clyde Tunnel and Erskine Bridge, the £78 million structure would be the river's only opening road bridge.

Supporters argue the crossing could be a major boost for employment, leisure, health and education, though some concerns have been raised about how it might affect congestion or pull jobs from Clydebank town centre.

Options for the crossing include Yoker to Renfrew or from Dock Street, east Clydebank.

The leaders of West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City and Renfrewshire Councils viewed potential locations last week.

Residents and businesses can meet the City Deal Project Team who are behind the bridge and see plans on Thursday, June 16 at St Margaret of Scotland Hospice Education Centre or and on Tuesday, June 21 at Yoker Community Campus.

Councillor Martin Rooney, leader of West Dunbartonshire Council, said: “This landmark bridge will be a tremendous asset to our communities and put us right at the heart of the regional economy.

"It will have a positive impact on local life and help to create a thriving future where businesses can grow and residents can take advantage of new connections to employment, leisure, health and educational opportunities.”

Supporters said the bridge for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will "increase the potential for business growth by improving connections with customers and suppliers on both sides of the river. It will also enhance access to land which is currently underused or derelict; unlocking the potential for regeneration and new development in the Yoker, Clydebank and Renfrew areas".

The bridge is part of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside Project and is funded by the £1.13 billion Glasgow City Region City Deal investment in infrastructure.
