NEARLY 60 primary school pupils have been showing off their language skills in a special showcase event in Clydebank Town Hall.

Last Wednesday, June 1, children from 24 schools across West Dunbartonshire invited members of the public to showcase their language skills.

It follows a year of learning Spanish, French and German in the 1+2 Languages initiative, introduced by the Scottish Government in 2011.

It aims to ensure all children have the opportunity to learn a modern language from P1 and a second modern language from P5.

The event was run by 25 of the council's primary school probationer teachers.

Students from Clydebank and St Peter the Apostle High School were also on hand to chat to the youngsters about language learning at secondary level.

Each primary with a probationer teacher was represented by two pupils, who manned their own stall with examples of their languages work ranging from PowerPoint presentations to models of major European landmarks.

Heather Stuart, a P3 pupil from Goldenhill Primary School in Clydebank, was speaking to visitors about Spanish.

She said: “We can say things like ‘good morning’ and ‘good afternoon’, and we know how to count to 100. I really like the Spanish games that we play.”

Councillor John Mooney, Depute Convener, told the Post: “In an increasingly globalised world languages are ever more important, besides being a fun and engaging part of the Curriculum for Excellence. Our teaching and Education staff have done a wonderful job supporting our pupils in their learning, and I hope we can work together to build upon this in years to come.”
