A KNIGHTSWOOD teenager who spat in his former partner’s face has been locked up for 10 months.

Steven Bowie assaulted the woman during a disturbance in the multi-storey Glennifer View block in Drumry on January 8 this year. He also broke bail conditions by failing to appear at court on July 15.

The 19-year-old, of Kirkton Avenue, appeared from custody at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week to be sentenced for the offences.

The court heard that Bowie and the woman had been in a two-year relationship but that it had come to an end. The two remained on friendly terms and Bowie had been in the company of the woman that day but they had parted company at 8pm.

Fiscal depute Jeanette Maclean explained: “Around 15 minutes later the woman heard a bang on the door, it was the accused and he told her to open the door. He appeared angry and there was an altercation between them “He went to the bedroom area and sat on the bed but she asked him to leave.” The court was told that the woman had contacted a friend, who found the victim visibly upset and in tears. Bowie didn’t calm down and when he approached his ex-girlfriend the friend intervened in the dispute to separate them.

Bowie then said “I’ve got one more thing to say to you” before spitting in his ex-partner’s face several times.

The friend and another witness to the incident were taken aback by Bowie’s behaviour and insisted that he leave the flat. The police were contacted and they traced Bowie later that night.

Defence solicitor Bert Thomson, said that his client had returned to the house after hearing a story about his ex from a friend.

He said: “Mr Bowie was at the house, everything was fine and they were chatting and watching television. After he left a friend gave him some information that he didn’t know about.

“It was a disgusting thing to do and he understands that your lordship will send him to custody but I would ask that you limit that time in custody. The relationship has ended and there is no contact between them.” Imposing the custodial sentence, Sheriff Simon Fraser said: “For a man of your age you have an appalling record.” He sentenced Bowie to eight months on the assault charge and a further two months for failing to appear in court. The sentences will run consecutively and were backdated to September 10.
