Green Building for the Future
To encourage the green building concept in existing structures, government grants are also available to the private homeowner. It is hoped that this will make more houses eco-friendly.
The reasons for this are three-fold: to help protect the environment; to have in place alternative Basic ways to make your home "greener" include the installation of double glazing, roof and wall insulation, wood-burning stoves and more energy-efficient boilers.
The keener environmentalist may wish to invest in such measures as a solar hot water system or domestic wind turbine. While expensive, such improvements to your home will begin to pay for themselves immediately.
When contemplating green building, there are three main areas to consider.
Firstly, material: this should be reclaimed or come from a renewable source such as clay or hemp. Secondly, energy: energy-efficient lighting and low-energy appliances should be significant features of your home. Finally, water: water harvesting and recycling systems will help you conserve that vital element, H2O.
And green building needn't stop with your actual home. The concept extends outdoors to include responsible waste recycling, conscientious composting and growing your own fresh vegetables using organic fertilisers.
Green building - can you dig it?
