Make-believe land
West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) leader Iain Robertson claims “West Dunbartonshire is a lovely green place” and he speaks of “fabulous...rivers” (02/07/08).
Next to the Titan Crane lies one of the most toxic and severely polluted stretches of water in Britain, at the confluence of the Cart and the Clyde (SEPA).
The whole 10 mile stretch from Glasgow to the Erskine bridge barely supports two milligrams a litre of dissolute oxygen in the water — which is lethal to fish (SEPA).
Due to the severe modification of the natural watercourse there is also a salt water low oxygen sink which forms down the water column because of the greater density of salt over freshwater (SEPA).
What you see of the Clyde from the Titan Crane is a dead zone, precisely because the river has been trashed.
Recently, WDC invited a professor to examine its claim to the River Leven.
He found WDC treats that river “as a liability”.
Despite a deluge of complaints about dumping and pollution (SEPA) on the River Leven.
WDC lives in a make-believe land of spectacular watercourses and “stunning river views and scenery”.
The water quality on Loch Lomond had to be downgraded on WDC’s watch (SEPA).
WDC is not interested in the ecological status of the canal, as such, millions of pounds have been squandered on “animations”.
WDC has made a cartoon out of the place. It is all lies, all for show — cheap sales gimmicks and publicity stunts.
WDC should not keep a goldfish, never mind take care of our waterways.
