Recalling memories

Printer Print Article

STANDING waiting at Clydebank bus stance my memory goes back to the days when the only bus companies on the road were the SMT, the Glasgow Corporation buses, and on Dumbarton Road there was the tram car.

But that was the days when the bus driver wore a uniform and was tidy and courteous.

Now, in the present day, you have various bus companies — the vast majority are helpful and the bus is comfortable and clean, but the same cannot be applied to the small buses that are on the road.

At this time, I have found that the passengers on these particular buses have to hold on tight when the so-called drivers are speeding and bumping over the speed bumps, with no thought for their passengers — who are sometimes elderly or mothers with small children.

I have travelled on two of these small buses and one of the drivers was apparently studying the highway code at intervals whilst driving, and was not very pleasant.

The other bus I was on had its exit door open while children were alighting the bus, which was still in motion.

I wonder if these drivers are given any training on how to drive a bus with paying passengers?

As I was a bus driver with the SMT, Glasgow corporation and London buses, I see these particular type of bus drivers are not trained enough to know the complexities of the modern bus driver.

I would say that the number 84 bus route is a good example of the way the bus driver was in the old days.

If the companies which run these small buses look at the number 84 bus they will see how clean the bus is and the courtesy of the drivers.
