Hospice argument

Printer Print Article

The letter, ‘Accept hospice decision’, was dismissive of Sister Rita and the excellent work done by all those at St Margaret’s Hospice who have devoted themselves to caring for the frail and the dying.

The argument at the centre of the current difficulties facing the hospice is about how to care best for those who are frail and dying.

The hospice has demonstrated exceptional care for these over many years and wishes to continue to do so.

The Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board has a different view — it wishes to reconfigure the care provided by the hospice and considers that this is simple and straight forward to achieve.

The health board does not appear to value the approach taken by the hospice, preferring instead to focus on a narrow assessment based on population and care trends in the north of the city and the attraction of a Private Finance Initiative deal at Blawarthill Hospital.

The anonymous author of the letter looks for Sister Rita to provide proof of her position.

Sister Rita does not have to.

I am sure that the very many families who have watched their loved ones treated with respect and dignity as they reached the end of their lives in St Margaret’s Hospice are the people who can give the most convincing testimony as to the value of this fine hospice.
