ROBBED ROY

Classy Clydebank's away win dream stolen by early goal

IT was honours even at Adamslie Park, but there should have only been one winner in this engrossing clash between two of the league's big guns.

Clydebank dominated play from start to finish and were superior to Rob Roy in every department.

But the dogged league leaders showed their credentials with a determined defensive display, which limited Budgie McGhie’s side to very few chances.

The visitors were dealt the worst possible blow after just three minutes when Stewart Maxwell’s speculative 30-yard strike sailed over Stefan Gonet high into the net.

The goal was a setback for Bankies but you wouldn’t have known it.

Led by skipper Gordon Lappin and backed by a large, noisy support, it was the Bankies who looked the more dangerous side.

Clinton Maxwell and Mark Bowie were superb in attack, winning headers and holding up the ball as support swept forward from the midfield.

Unfortunately the duo missed the two best chances of the half, Maxwell with a header from a Lappin free kick and Bowie from close range.

Former Clydebank keeper Kevin Bell was getting a rough time from the visiting support who felt let down by the manner of his departure from the club last summer.

It seemed to get to the big fella, whose normally dependable kicking became erratic.

The second half was more even but again it was Clydebank who looked the better side.

David Fisher’s trademark runs from wide on the left and Ged Hoey's support from the heart of the midfield, meant that Rob Roy could never really get a foot hold on the game.

Maxwell had a good shout for a penalty turned down but it looked as if Jonathon Carter timed his tackle to perfection.

However, spot-kick joy came the visitors’ way when 13 minutes from time, a Roy defender handled in the box.

There was no doubt about the award and Bowie’s shot sent Bell the wrong way top secure a point.

Clydebank assistant boss, Jimmy McQuade, said: `I'm disappointed we didn't win but the boys played very well and we dominated most of the match.

`We've just got to make sure we beat Cambuslang Rangers this week to get us back on track.`

Cambuslang Rangers v Clydebank, Saturday, Somervell Park, kick-off 2pm.

CLYDEBANK: Gonet, Allum, McInnes, Docherty, Soutar (Anis), Kenna (Kennedy), Lappin, Hoey, Fisher, Kennedy, Maxwell (Cunningham), Bowie. Subs not used: Hailstones, Kelly.
