SWEDE SMELL OF SUCCESS 20/07/06
By Jo-Anne Roud
BANKIE fans were among the thousands who flocked to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond last week to watch super cool Swede Johan Edfors capture the Barclays Scottish Open with a stunning round of golf.
Edfors captured his third European Tour title and with it the top £400,000 prize with the lowest round of the week, a 63.
Fans from near and far travelled to Loch Lomond Golf Club to witness some of the world’s greatest players in action.
Dalmuir ladies Maureen Green, 38 and Sarah Wallace, 24, headed along on Sunday to watch the last day of the action.
Maureen said: “This is the first time we have been to the Scottish Open and it’s been great, and the weather helps.
“I’m here to cheer on Colin Montgomerie.”
Sarah added: “It’s just such a great atmosphere.”
Also watching the action on Sunday was Drumchapel man John Paton, 43, who said: “This is the third time and I’ve been here and I always like to come on the last day to see the winner.”
Also helping out on the day were more than a dozen volunteers from Clydebank and District Golf Club, who had the important task of ensuring events ran smoothly throughout the day.
Edfors, 30 — who looks more like a rock star than a typical Swedish sports ace — had sealed his victory almost two hours before the rest of the field had come, with a stunning round which included nine birdies and a front half of 30.
He has now set his sights on qualifying for the Ryder Cup in September and is also relishing in playing in this week’s Open Championship at Royal Hoylake.
He said: “When my putting is on I’m hard to beat and I’m looking forward to the Open this week.”
