COME RAIN OR SHINE 13/07/06
By Jo-Anne Roud
CLYDESDALE Harriers’ junior members braced the thunder, lightning and rain at Wishaw this week.
And despite the dull weather conditions, the stars continued to shine in the Young Athletes League.
For the U-17s, first place results were achieved by Jonathon Farrell in the 100m (13 seconds) and 200m (24 seconds) A races, and by Cameron Watts in the 100m hurdles B race.
Craig Prior brought home a first place for the U-15s with a personal best of 58.9 seconds in the 400m.
Anton Russell’s determination earned him third place in the 80m hurdles — a race which he led up until the last hurdle.
The ladies continued with their season’s success, fighting off the midgies as well as the competition to win the team prize at the Calderglen 10K Trail race on Friday evening.
Fiona McCue and Ann Murray raced together, coming in 74th and 75th overall in 49:41, and Kath Scott completed the team in 92nd place in 52:42.
Impressively, Ann Murray had already raced in the 5K trail race earlier that same evening, winning the first female vet prize.
The ladies went on to win the Dunbartonshire Amateur Athletics Half Marathon Championships in the Balloch to Clydebank half marathon race at the weekend.
This time the team comprised Ann Murray (1hr 30), Aileen Scott (1hr 39) and Marina McCallum (1hr 39).
The greatest personal achievement of the day went to Christine Duncanson, who took a massive six minutes from her personal best, finishing in one hour 43 minutes.
Kath Scott finished in one hour 46 minutes.
There were a number of personal bests for the men, with Gus Cairney leading them home in 1hr 26 followed closely by Paul Carroll in 1hr 27 (pb) and Brian Gallagher, also 1hr 27.
Gerry Montgomery followed his recent marathon triumphs with a personal best of 1hr 30 , Stuart Alison (1hr 33), John Foley (1hr 37), Peter Rudzinski (1hr 38), Colin Gray (1hr 49) and Laurie Pearson (1hr 51).
