Mystery illness leaves Scott’s record dream in tatters
GOLFING champion Scott Henry sensationally bowed out of the Scottish Youths Stroke Play Championship at the weekend after being struck down by a mystery illness.
The pre-tournament favourite retired with a bug that had floored him for over a week.
Teen star Henry bravely started his round at the Mortonhall course, but had to retire after managing only eight holes.
The illness has left his dream of setting yet another golf record in tatters.
Had he secured a victory, the 19-year-old, from Hardgate, would have become the first Scot ever to win both the Stroke Play and Youths Stroke Play in the same year.
Ace Henry, a member of Cardross Golf Club, had struggled to prepare for his challenge against a top class field at Mortonhall.
He said: “I really haven’t been well at all, and struggled in The Amateur at the start of the week.
“I had woken up after playing in the St Andrews Links, feeling dizzy, and then was violently sick for about three days.
“I was in bed for about a week.
“I felt okay for the first five holes today, and I was hitting the ball well.
“The course was playing fair and I think that I could have played alright but I just couldn’t go on, I started to feel sick and was struggling to hit the ball.”
Scott captured his first senior title when he he triumphed at the Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Craigielaw recently.
He beat off stiff competition from England’s Ross McGowan, who had held top spot on the leader board from day one.
He headed to Mortonhall hoping to become only the second player ever, and the first Scot, to win both the Stroke Play and Youths Stroke Play in the same year.
Only England’s Gordon Brand (Knowle) has managed the double in 1980.
Scott is now set to headline a strong Scotland side in the European Youths Team Championships next month.
Scotland will be looking to become only the fourth nation to successfully defend their crown at the competition, whch will be held from July 11-15.
Team captain and former Walker Cup star Barclay Howard is confident that his side can mount a serious challenge.
He said: `We have a strong team with a number of extremely talented individuals.
“I know they will be focused and determined to play to the best of their ability. Let’s just hope that their best will be good enough to win the title.”
