CLYDEBANK’S season ended with a whimper when they went down to a solitary second half strike from Cumbernauld last Wednesday.

In many ways the match summed up the Bankies’ season, with chance after chance spurned before the other team hit with a sucker punch.

Chris McKee and Clinton Maxwell missed gilt-edged opportunities to finish the match in the first half.

But they were unable to break the deadlock as Thomas McGovern’s goal led a charmed life.

The result was academic for both clubs, who ended up in mid-table despite early season promise.

Bankies, though, had the incentive of finishing above local rivals Yoker as well as giving a winning send off to central defender Mick Fallen.

Captain-for-the-night Fallen ended a successful two year stint at the club by hanging up his boots.

He was runaway player of the year last season and became a firm favourite with the fans for a string of committed displays.

His teammates in a makeshift line-up, hit by injuries and work commitments, went all out to give him the win he craved but it wasn’t to be.

The closest effort on goal in a first half dominated by the home side was from McKee whose thumping header crashed off the crossbar.

The busy midfielder was a constant nuisance to the Cumbernauld defence and he could have had at least a hat trick.

But he was unlucky.

There was one chance he should have scored when he tried to lob the keeper at the end of the half, but on the other occasions last-gasp defending and good goalkeeping denied him.

The second half provided more of the same with chances squandered by Ryan Scobie and Colin Boylan as Clydebank pushed for an opener

United, though, came more into the match and it was no surprise when they took the lead 18 minutes from time.

Bankies huffed-and-puffed to get back on terms but a goal proved elusive and they ended a disappointing league season on a losing note.

Clydebank boss Budgie McGhie’s focus now turns to rebuilding for next season and he has already targeted players he feels are capable of gaining promotion to the Super League at the third attempt.

At the start of the week McGhie was in talks with a coach he hopes to bring in as his assistant boss after the departure of Gerry Crawley.

He was also busy eyeing up prospective signing targets along with first team coach Bobby Cameron.

Clydebank FC will be having a fund raising night this Saturday May 20 in St Eunan’s Hall, with two bands, Someone’s Sons and Gap, performing.

Tickets priced £4 can be purchased from Stephen Mclaren or at the door on the night.
