STRONG: The high wind failed to help Clydebank scrum its way to victory at Dillichip on Saturday

The Clydebank 1st XV were unceremoniously beaten 21-10 on Saturday by a more determined Lomond side who reminded the Bankie players that this will not be an easy league to play in.

Clydebank had the wind at their backs and the benefit of a slight slope which saw them have the lion’s share of territory.

However, the players failed to capitalise on their normally strong line-out..

It was eventually a mistake by Lomond on their 22-metre line that let Clydebank through.

A long pass out from a ruck by the Lomond scrumhalf was intercepted by David Bell who gladly accepted the gift and touched down under the posts with a conversion by Michael Starkey.

The remainder of the half saw Clydebank squander possession and fail to finish off several clear scoring chances.

Lomond defended defiantly throughout as they scrambled for every loose ball and harried Clydebank around the loose play giving away persistent penalties in the process which the referee failed to punish.

Clydebank went in at half time 0-7. The second half was all Lomond as Clydebank started to give away silly penalties.

An infantile mistake after six minutes by a Clydebank player, led to Lomond’s first attempt from 40-yards which hit the post.

On 15 minutes Clydebank went into a 10-minute spell where they opened the flood gates for Lomond — it started with two penalties close to their own line. Clydebank had a short respite where they went up the park and came away with a penalty from Starkey.

Lomond, however, returned back down the pitch to add another penalty and on 25 minutes, they added their first try but missed the conversion.

The score was now 14-10 and Clydebank looked to be on the ropes.

Clydebank tried to come back into the match but looked lethargic in attack save for a few strong runs by Scott McIntosh.

The Clydebank defence fumbled high balls and missed tackles as Lomond pushed forward. Eventually on 35 minutes it was all over for Clydebank as Lomond added another converted try to end the scoring at 21-10.

Next week, the Clydebank 1st XV will take on Oban Lorne at home looking to secure their first win and make sure that they define Whitecrook as a tough place for visiting teams.

The 2nd XV, meanwhile, will travel to Greenock to play Greenock Wanderers.
