Bankies fight back
Arthurlie 1 Clydebank 3
Alan Jack
IT MIGHT have been a friendly but Bankies boss Budgie McGhie can take heart from Saturday’s convincing win against Arthurlie.
The Barrhead side have strengthened their squad and fancy a shot at the Super League Premier Division title.
They fielded a strong line-up against Clydebank who included summer signings John Jack, Gary Lynn, Martin McIntyre and Andy Selkirk in a 17-man squad.
Both sides looked in the mood early on but Bankies suffered a set back in 10 minutes when Peter Jordan twisted a knee and had to be replaced.
Alan Jack was always going to figure despite starting on the bench but the talented midfielder didn’t expect to get on so early and team up with brother John in the heart of the midfield.
The first clear-cut chance fell to George Wallace after Alan Jack had given the ball away in the middle of the park.
But keeper Stefan Gonet parried wide the striker’s shot from inside the box.
At the other end trialist Ryan Scobie brought a fine stop from Peter Shaw after great approach play from Andy Selkirk and Paul Allum.
Five minutes before the break Wallace opened the scoring when he slotted home after an ill-judged pass back from John Cunningham.
Bankies started the second half well and Scobie came close with a header from a John Jack cross.
It was the other Jack, though, who made the next telling contribution with a typical strike to level the match.
The Arthurlie dugout knew what was going to happen when they conceded a free kick 30 yards out.
Former Bankies coach Jimmy McQuade, now part of the Dunterlie Park backroom team, shouted a warning to keeper Shaw.
“He’s going top hit it,” Jimmy bellowed.
And hit it he did, as sweet as a nut, right into the top corner to level the match.
After that there was no looking back for a sharp and fit looking Clydebank side.
Martin McIntyre, a second half sub, put the visitors ahead 15 minutes from time when his deflected shot squirmed past the keeper.
Gaffer McGhie had changed his front two replacing Ryan Scobie and Andy Selkirk with Kevin Proctor and Mark Hailstones.
With just four minute left the duo combined to seal the win in style, Proctor heading home a fine Hailstones cross.
Clydebank’s next outing is on Wednesday against the Vale of Leven at Millburn Park. Kick off 7pm.
Clydebank: Gonet; Soutar, Lynn (McIntyre 59), Jordan (Jack 12), Cunningham (Packham 59), McInnes, Allum, Jack, Selkirk (Hailstones 66), Scobie (Proctor 66), Fisher. Sub not used: Galloway
