Scots fire GB to judo silverware
PITTED against some of the best fighters his age, Jim McKelvie returned from the World Masters Judo Championships having helped Britain win a silver medal.
The 51-year-old senior events and halls officer for West Dunbartonshire Council travelled to Belgium as part of the Great Britain team to compete in the M5 Open and M5 + 100kg categories.
He and fellow Scot Jim Birnie’s fighting spirit caught the eye of the GB selectors, who picked the pair for the team event on the final day.
The annual event runs over five days and with over 1600 entries from more than 40 countries is the largest Masters Judo Competitions in the world.
Jim said: “It was a fantastic tournament and a privilege to represent the country at this level of competition and I would wish to take this opportunity to thank the council for its continued assistance and support.”
Despite a poor weight category performance, three straight wins in the open secured his a fifth-place finish against quality opposition, including grapplers from France and Canada.
But defeat at the hands of Igor Chickanov of Russia ended any hopes of a medal.
