COACH: Stuart Allison

BANKIES have welcomed former Arthurlie stalwart Stuart Allison to their coaching set-up — with their assistant having left in the opposite direction.

Jimmy McQuade’s new role at the Stagecoach Premier side left boss Budgie McGhie in need of further coaching support.

The former ‘Lie defender, known as Souness, brings a wealth of experience in the Junior game, spending nine years with the Barrhead outfit, many as club captain.

But McGhie is keen to stress this is not a direct replacement for his

right-hand man.

McGhie said: “Stuart is a well respected player and has shown a great attitude throughout his career. He was very positive when we approached him about this coaching role and I am sure he has all the attributes to make the step from playing to coaching.

“Many people might see Jimmy [McQuade] leaving and presume Stuart will be the new assistant. But I prefer to look on our set-up as a coaching team which he is joining.”

On the playing front, St Roch’s defender Gavin Rushford has agreed to join the Bankies and will meet up with his new teammates when pre-season training starts tonight (Wednesday).

The 22-year-old previously had spells at senior level with Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park, breaking into the Jags first team when he was just 16.

Several clubs moved for the defender, who can also play in midfield, but McGhie got his man after a previous attempt in January fell through.

McGhie said: “He was recommended to us a while ago but we couldn’t afford to move for him in January. He has experience at senior level and he is still very young so it could be a useful addition to the squad.

“With no disrespect to St Roch’s, now he has the chance to prove himself at a higher level.”
