It’s Miller time in narrow win
Clydebank 1 Renfrew 0
CLOSE ENCOUNTER: At Western Park Bankies went down 6-1 but it was a closer affair at Glenhead Park with revenge exacted — just
BANKIES eased their relegation fears with a narrow win against Renfrew on Monday.
A first half strike from Brian Miller was all that separated the teams in a close affair.
But Budgie McGhie’s spirited side just about deserved to take the points to notch back-to-back league wins,
The Clydebank gaffer named an unchanged line-up from the one that plundered Kilwinning Rangers on Saturday.
Kevin Proctor was once again given the role of loan striker in a 4-5-1 formation and he looked to have given the home side a dream start when a downward header from a Mark Hailstones centre appeared to cross the line.
But Frew keeper Craig Marshall did enough to convince the referee he had kept it out when his outstretched leg blocked the ball before it could be deemed a clear goal.
Peter Jordan was next to come close for Bankies when he tried his luck from long distance after a clever Alan Jack header teed him up.
Jack got in on the act minutes later with a trademark free kick that keeper Marshall did well to push clear.
Just after the half hour mark, Clydebank made the breakthrough when Miller rose at the front post to nod home an inch-perfect Paul Allum cross.
McGhie’s side took the lead the last time the sides met in a game best forgotten — Renfrew went on to win 6-1. So there were some concerns when it looked as if the visitors had the upper hand leading up to the break but the home support need not have worried.
Clydebank went on to control the game in the second half with a clutch of players, notably Sinclair Soutar, Mark Hailstones and Alan Jack, in fine form.
Bankies survived one or two scary moments with Paddy Gallagher coming close in Renfrew’s best moment. But the timely introduction of subs Andy Kenna, Mark Bowie and Gordon Lappin strengthened the team and they ran out deserved winners.
Clydebank: Corr, McInnes, Packham, Cunningham, Soutar, Allum, Jordan (Lappin), Miller (Kenna), Jack, Proctor (Bowie) Subs not used: Docherty, Gonet.
• Clydebank are in action this Saturday, at home to Annbank United at Glenhead Park, kick off 2pm.
