Gonet no dae that
Clydebank 0 Kilbirnie Ladeside 2
BANKIES’ miserable win-less run continued with a home cup exit at the hands of Super League rivals Kilbirnie.
Two goals late in the first half on Monday were enough to take the Ayrshire outfit — bossed by Clydebank legend Tommy Bryce — through to the quarter finals,
The home side started well with Alan Jack and Kevin Proctor seeing plenty of the ball early on.
But it was the visitors who threatened first when Alain Kinney’s snap shot was well saved by Stefan Gonet.
Jack came close to opening the scoring when he fired a tremendous 30-yard drive just past keeper Paul McCann’s left hand post. The talented midfielder showed his class with some superb deliveries from corners and free kicks.
Unfortunately, no one in the Clydebank team made the most of decent openings. At the other end, only an alert Barry Docherty, with a goal-line clearance, prevented Kinney giving Ladeside the lead.
The visitors were growing in confidence and for a period in the first half had Bankies pinned back.
However, resolute defending from Docherty and Colin Sutherland in particular kept them at bay.
It looked as if it would be goalless at the break but a careless four-minute spell proved decisive.
Stevie Miller opened the scoring when his shot on the turn from the edge of the box flew past Gonet.
And on the stroke of half-time, Gonet conceded another goal — one he will surely want to forget. The big keeper tried to dribble past Kinney who nicked the ball before stabbing it home as Gonet tried desperately to retrieve the situation.
Bankies tried hard to get back into the match in the second half but created little threat.
Sub Brian Miller had a good penalty claim denied when it looked as if he was held as he tried to turn in the box. Then David Fisher, who started the match at left back but pushed further forward late on, had a glorious chance to half the deficit in the closing minutes.
Unfortunately, Fisher scooped his effort high and wide when he should have at least tested McCann.
Clydebank: Gonet, Jordan, Docherty, Sutherland, Fisher, Lappin, Soutar, Lennox, Jack, Craig (Miller), Proctor. Subs: Collatin, Corr.
