CHIN UP: Strong leap by the Bankies

Paisley 1st XV 27 Clydebank 1st XV 30

CLYDEBANK finished the season with a flourish — remaining undefeated in the league.

A narrow win over a committed Paisley side maintained their unblemished record and ended the Buddies’ hopes of joining them in West Division One.

The match was a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions.

Clydebank started with a zeal which overwhelmed Paisley and were soon attacking the home side’s try line.

After several rucks, Mark Dry crossed for the first score with Ross Moffatt adding the extras.

Paisley replied with a penalty from Gavin Newlands and a converted try from Jonno Murrel to edge ahead by three with less than 15 minutes played.

And another Newlands penalty put them further ahead.

Graeme Kyle reduced the defecit to just a single point, crossing the line after Dry was stopped agonisingly close following quick ball from a line-out.

Another penalty soon after to Paisley was missed and Clydebank came back once more. Ross Moffat fed Scott McIntosh who ran for the posts then passed to Don Ross who wrong footed the defence and gave the Bankies the lead.

Moffatt slotted the conversion for a half-time lead but the second half started in less positive fashion, down to 14 men when the prop was sin binned.

Not disheartened, Paul Andrew scored from a five metre line-out, somehow making a nonsense of the numerical disadvantage.

A Moffatt penalty opened the gap to 14 points but Paisley could still see their chance for promotion and scored a try from a No.8 pick up.

With the added conversion, Paisley were within seven points of the draw that would see them promoted.

Clydebank soon returned to full strength but were to have another player sin binned by a poor referee who had lost control of the match.

On 35 minutes, Paisley winger James Dayer capped a fine move with a much needed try and the added conversion drew the scores level.

But a penalty for the Bankies with five minutes left allowed Moffatt to slam the promotion door shut on their opponents.

Clydebank 1st XV: Baxter, Shearer, Kyle, Cuthbert, Ross, Starkey I, Andrew, McIntosh, Moffatt, McCombe, Dow, Watson, Dry, Miller, Starkey M, Murphy, Sloss, Parr, Welson, Nellis.

Next week, the club is on tour to Durham and then plays the Old Crocks match on May 23. The Mini rugby travels to Paisley on Sunday at 12pm.
