Away go Whe-Ho promotion hopes
Yoker Athletic 0 Port Glasgow 0
YOKER drew a blank against the Port which all but ended any hope of promotion.
It was a hard fought, tight affair between two promotion chasing sides but Port Glasgow are now in the driving seat, a point ahead and with four games more to play than the Whe-Ho in the race for second.
Manager Jim George gave a start to Billy McLafferty and Friday’s cup hero Tommy Jordan with Bryan Boal missing through injury, while Alan Prentice was also unavailable due to work commitments.
The opening chance fell to David Watt with less than five minutes on the clock when he raced clear on the left but his shot at Sean Graham’s goal was tame.
Andy Monaghan had Port’s first chance but his drive from 20 yards was wide of Kenny Meechan’s left hand post.
In a match which was always going to be tight, both sides battled for possession in midfield in the game’s early exchanges and goalmouth action was at a premium with any real chances coming from set-pieces.
Jordan headered over for the Whe-Ho from a Kenny Murray corner whilst Eddie Walton may have done better at the other end.
The second half started similarly to the first, with both sides competing heavily in midfield and neither Meechan nor Graham particularly busy in either goal.
The Port did come close with free-kicks from Monaghan and skipper Paul Coyle but Meechan was up to the task on both occasions. At the other end, Graham pulled off a superb stop from a Watt volley. McLafferty then chose to shoot when he could — and should — have played Jordan in after a fine run from the midfielder. Scott Cameron saw an effort blocked on the line as he got to another Murray corner whilst Nugent had Meechan scrambling as the game approached the final whistle.
It was a game in which both sides gave everything, and ensured they gave their opponents nothing, with a draw a fair but unfortunate result.
In a hard fought team performance, special mention should go to the Yoker backline of Sean Brady, Scott McKay and Lenny Marshall with pint-sized stopper Marshall edging the VB Contracts man of the match award.
Yoker Athletic: Meechan, Smith, Marshall, Brady, McKay, Cameron (McAdam), McLafferty, Murray, Watt, Jordan, Frew. Unused subs: Wardrop (GK), Bissland, McKellar, Slythe.
Yoker’s next match is away to St Roch’s on Saturday, kick-off is 2pm.
