Junior section swell in the District Golf
ON Saturday, the gents section competed in the Japanese Trophy qualifying competition.
There were around 170 players in the field and, by the end of the day, 20 players qualified to take part in the match play section of the competition.
Within the competitions there was also the weekly sweep which as usual was keenly fought.
The first class saw Gary Swan’s score of nett 65 hold off strong challenges from Raymond Walsh and Martin Long who both scored nett 66s.
The second class was won by Billy Richardson who scored a nett 65. In the third class, Tony Bennett won with yet another nett 65 beating Stuart Greaves into second place.
There is also a competition for the gents section on some Wednesday’s throughout the summer.
And the first qualifying round for the Claret Jug competition took place on April 9 with more than 50 players taking part.
The first winner was John Geegan who scored a brilliant nett 62.
During week two, the juniors took part in the Scottish Boys Championship which was played in Southerness.
David Gallagher made it through to the second round and only lost by one hole while John Henry made it through to the fourth round only to lose by the same score.
More than 250 boys started the competition so both David and John did very well.
The junior section has increased this season with a further 17 new members.
Many of the new members took part in the first medal, including Oreda Hutchison who put in a very good score for her first competitive round.
