CLYDEBANK boss Budgie McGhie was left ruing a series of missed chances as his Scottish Cup heroes lost out in the Bankies’ latest battle.
Incredibly, it was Clydebank’s first league match of 2008 as cup exploits and a series of postponements hit the fixture card.
McGhie made a number of changes for the clash at New Pebble Park, with Barry Docherty, Andy Kenna, David Fisher and Brian Miller added to the starting line-up.
The absence of Paul Allum, Paul Craig, John Cunningham and Mark Bowie meant some of the alterations were forced.
Despite starting well the Bankies were stung when, against the run of play, Annbank went ahead.
Annbank’s Jim Wilson neatly tucked the ball past Barry John Corr for what proved to be the winner.
But the Bankies continued to press and looked a dead cert to equalise as the game went on.
Flying winger David Fisher was giving the home defence a torrid time with some superb running with the ball.
Two clear-cut chances could have turned the game when first Fisher had a net-bound shot saved, before Kenna nodded a simple header straight at the keeper when it looked easier to score. After the break the Bankies onslought continued when Fisher was put clear by a fantastic first time pass from James Lennox, but a great last ditch tackle saw the chance go begging.
McGhie tried to shake things up a little and introduced subs Kevin Proctor, Alan Jack and Sinclair Soutar to the fray.
Despite the changes keeping the pressure on Annbank the Bankie fans finally felt it was not their day when the referee failed to point to the spot when Docherty was tripped inside the box.
This defeat leaves the promotion hopes of McGhie’s men hanging by a thread and they will look to get back to winning ways in their next outing.
Clydebank’s next match is at home to East Kilbride Thistle on Tuesday April 15 with a 6.45pm kick off. Clydebank: Corr, Docherty, McInnes, Packham, Sutherland (Soutar), Kenna, Lennox (Jack), Lappin, Hailstones (Proctor), Miller, Fisher.
