YOKER Athletic’s promotion hopes were dealt a blow as they were held to a a goalless draw against Benburb on Saturday.

With skipper Scott McKay, top goalscorer David Watt and powerhouse frontman Raymond Dunne all missing for the Whe-Ho, Kenny Murray, veteran striker Billy McLafferty and Bryan Boal all featured.

Yoker started brightly and Ghattas, in the Bens’ goal, had to get down sharply to save a Kenny Murray drive early on.

At the other end former Whe-Ho striker Tony O’Neill rose above Jaap to head straight at Kenny Meechan.

The first half was a tight affair, but just before the break Boal ran clear of the Bens’ defence before being hauled down by the defender. Despite a clear goalscoring opportunity being denied, the defender escaped with a caution and Bissland sent the resulting free kick inches over the bar to conclude the half.

After the break the tight match continued and the Whe-Ho pushed three men into attack as they tried to grab victory.

But in a rare Bens attack Gibson raced through a hesitant Yoker defence before being pulled back by Brian Smith who was sent off for the foul.

Despite being the better side for large spells the Whe-Ho players know their performance must improve if they are to stay in the thick of the promotion battle.

With no fixture on Saturday, Yoker could have a friendly arranged for Friday night so fans are advised to check out www.yokerathletic.com for updates.
