Clydebank 4 St Roch’s 1
A MAN of the match performance by debut defender Jerry Packham helped Bankies into the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
The sweeper, who impressed in recent friendlies, has been brought in to tighten up a defence which shipped six goals in its last outing away to Renfrew.
Packham coped well, as did fellow new boy, midfielder Brian Miller. He snubbed offers from rivals Yoker and Rutherglen to bolster Budgie’s squad.
And while the new starts stood firm in tough conditions, the rest of the Bankies team made their ‘mark’ on the third round.
Doubles from Mark Hailstones and Mark Bowie earned the home side a safe passage against the Glasgow outfit.
Bankies opened the scoring through Mark Bowie on just three minutes, when he latched on to a first-time pass from Andy Kenna before going on a solo run and finishing with ease.
Hailstones doubled the lead when he smashed home a loose ball from eight yards after a mazy run by Miller caused havoc in the St Roch’s defence.
Clydebank were cruising at this stage and keeper Barry John Corr’s biggest worry, on his home debut, was staying warm on what was an icy cold day.
But slackness in the home defence a minute before the break allowed Kenny Quinn to lift the ball past Corr from six yards and pull a goal back — one the Candy Rock scarcely deserved.
The match was a much more even affair in the second half as St Roch’s pushed hard to get back on terms.
Kenna almost restored Bankies’ two-goal lead but his fine strike from the edge of the box was tipped over.
However, the opposition keeper could do little to stop Hailstones stabbing home his second and Clydebank’s third from an Alan Jack corner 17 minutes from the end. And the goal scorer turned provider a few minutes later when Hailstones superb cross was nodded home at the back post by Bowie to complete the scoring.
The draw for the fourth round was still unknown at the time of the Post going to press.
Clydebank are at home again this Saturday when they entertain Lesmahagow. The match kicks off at Glenhead Park at 1.45pm
